Overview
Our Google Sheets Integration just got an upgrade!
Previously, customers using the integration across multiple locations had to create separate designs for each – even though the cell layout was identical. The only differences were the data values (like same menu, different prices). This meant duplicating the design and updating the Sheet Name for every one. A bit too time-consuming!
To solve this, we’ve introduced metadata for Google Sheets. Similar to what we use for POS integrations like Redcat and Task.
What is metadata for Google Sheets?
Metadata allows you to override the Sheet Name for each screen without creating multiple designs.
Create one design using the Google Sheets widget in the Designer.
Publish it to hundreds of screens.
Each screen displays different data from your Google Sheet based on its metadata (tab name).
Please note – in order to see the metadata under Deploy → Screen Name → Configure Screen, you will first need to have a design saved with a Google Sheet widget in it. This is to avoid the metadata field from appearing for everyone.
Create your design with the Google Sheet widget in it first, save it, then add your metadata at the end.
How does it work?
1. Set up your Google Sheet
Create a Google Sheet with multiple sheets (tabs) – one for each variation.
Name each sheet clearly and consistently. These names will be used in Fusion Signage metadata.
Keep the same cell structure across all sheets (same rows and columns for menus, prices, and so on).
Empty cells are fine – they simply won’t display in the design.
Tabs at the bottom might be named Store 1, Store 2, Store 3. These names will be entered as metadata for each screen.
2. Create your design
Configure the Google Sheets widget in Fusion Signage (click here to see how).
Enter any Sheet Name during design – it’s just for preview purposes.
When published, the metadata will override this value automatically.
Please note – the Sheet Name you set during design does not affect the final display if metadata is applied.
3. Add metadata to your screens
Go to Deploy → Screen Name → Screen Configuration.
Enter the exact Sheet Name (tab name) as it appears in your Google Sheet - including any spaces or capital letters for each screen. Accuracy matters. If the name doesn’t match exactly, the override won’t work.
4. Publish
Publish your design as usual.
The widget’s Sheet Name will be overridden by metadata, and each screen will show the correct cell values.
Why this is a cool update
Saves time – one design for multiple locations.
Reduce mistakes – no need to duplicate and manually update designs.
Scale with ease – deploy to hundreds of screens with unique data.
