This feature is designed exclusively for our resellers and distributors to assist with managing and updating end user devices remotely.
Using this feature, you can remotely upgrade the app version on customer devices. The information below covers everything you need to know to use this functionality.
Supported device types
You can remotely manage app versions for the following device platforms.
Android
BrightSign
Tizen (Samsung)
WebOS (LG)
Windows
All platforms except WebOS support both upgrades and downgrades to specific earlier versions.
WebOS devices are only capable of upgrading to the latest version. Downgrades are not supported.
Update requirements
Before performing a remote update, ensure the following.
Device must be online at the time of the update.
Device must be running a supported version:
Platform | Minimum version for remote update | Notes |
Android | 2.5.2 (recommended) | Devices on version 1.x cannot be updated remotely – manual update required. Devices on earlier than 2.5.2 may fail the remote update and need manual updates. Devices 2.5.2+ should update successfully if online. |
BrightSign | Any version | - |
Tizen | 2.3.7 | - |
WebOS | Any version | - |
Windows | 2.4.0 | - |
Enable remote updates
Each device must have ‘Enable Remote Updates’ activated within Settings. This allows Fusion Signage to push update commands. If this setting is disabled, remote updates will not work.
Special considerations for Android devices
Root access – Android devices must either be rooted or use a supported vendor update mechanism (e.g. Philips) to successfully update.
Unknown or unsupported devices – these may fail to update or could cause the app to crash and not restart.
Best practice – update your own devices before deploying to customer hardware.
How to remotely update a device
Go to the Deploy page in the Fusion Signage portal.
Click on the screen name you want to update.
In the pop-up, click the pencil icon next to the device version field.
Select the desired version from the drop-down list.
Wait up to 10 minutes for the update to be received and reflected in the portal.
Manual update for Android devices
If the remote update fails on an Android device:
Use the manual update button found on the identity overlay page of the screen.
Access this screen by pressing the centre / OK button on the remote while Fusion Signage content is visible.
Follow on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
If the manual update also fails:
You will need to install the latest app version manually directly on the device.
What to do if an update fails (all platforms)
If a device does not update successfully within 10 minutes, it likely requires a manual installation of the latest Fusion Signage app directly onto the device.
