Consumer devices
You may be wondering whether you can use an existing consumer device, like a Smart TV or tablet, with Fusion Signage instead of purchasing a commercial display or dedicated media player.
In some cases, you can. However, there are a few things worth considering before using consumer hardware for digital signage.
Smart TVs
Smart TVs are primarily designed for home entertainment rather than commercial digital signage.
Some Smart TVs may allow you to install Fusion Signage directly, while others can be used with an external media player. However, built-in operating systems, app support and functionality can vary significantly between brands and models.
Consumer Smart TVs may have limitations around:
- Automatic power on and off
- Launching Fusion Signage automatically after a restart
- Remote management
- Operating system and app updates
- Portrait orientation
- Brightness in commercial environments
- Extended or continuous operating hours
- Commercial warranty coverage
- Support for third-party applications
If your Smart TV supports APK installation and meets Fusion Signage's requirements, you may be able to install the Fusion Signage application directly. Check our installation guides for supported installation methods.
Otherwise, an external media player can often be a more reliable option than relying on the TV's built-in operating system.
It's also worth checking the manufacturer's warranty before using a consumer TV for digital signage, as some warranties may exclude or limit coverage for commercial use.
Tablets
Tablets can also be used for certain digital signage setups, particularly for smaller displays or situations where a traditional screen isn't practical.
However, tablets aren't generally designed to run digital signage continuously. Things like battery management, operating system updates, screen timeouts and automatic app behaviour can affect how reliably they operate.
For unattended or business-critical signage, purpose-built commercial hardware is usually the better option.
Consumer vs commercial hardware
The biggest difference is what the device was designed to do.
Consumer devices are generally built for personal or home use, while commercial displays and signage hardware are designed for longer operating hours and provide greater control over how the device behaves.
Commercial displays may also offer features like automatic power scheduling, portrait orientation, higher brightness, remote management and warranties designed specifically for business use.
This doesn't mean consumer devices can't work. For smaller or less critical setups, they may be perfectly suitable. It's simply important to understand the limitations before building your signage setup around them.
