Remote Device Application Update
This feature is available for our Resellers and Distributors only to assist with End User devices.
You can remotely upgrade the app version on customer devices. This document outlines everything you need to know to use this feature effectively.
Supported Device Types
You can remotely manage app versions for the following devices:
- Android
- BrightSign
- Tizen (Samsung)
- WebOS (LG)
- Windows
Notes:
- All platforms except WebOS support both upgrades and downgrades to specific earlier versions.
- WebOS devices are only able to upgrade to the most recent version and cannot be downgraded.
Update Requirements
Before attempting a remote update, please ensure the following:
- The device must be online at the time of updating.
- The device must be running a version that supports remote updates:
Minimum Version for Remote Update
- Android - 2.5.2 and above recommended
- BrightSign - Any version
- Tizen - 2.3.7
- WebOS - Any version
- Windows - 2.4.0
Android-specific version guidance:
- Devices running version 1.x will not update remotely. Manual update is required.
- Devices on versions earlier than 2.5.2 may fail to update remotely and will then also require manual updating.
- Devices on 2.5.2 or higher should update successfully if they are online.
Remote Update Setting
In addition, each device must have the "Enable Remote Updates" setting toggled on within the app settings on the device. This setting allows Fusion Signage to push update commands to the screen. If this setting is disabled, remote updates will not work.
Android Devices – Special Considerations
Android devices must have root access, or use a vendor-supplied update mechanism that we support (e.g. Philips), to successfully update. Unknown or unsupported devices may fail to update, or in rare cases, cause the application to crash and not restart.
We strongly recommend that you test updates on your own devices before deploying updates to customer devices.
How to Remotely Update a Screen
- Go to the Deploy page in the Fusion Signage portal.
- Click the screen name you wish to update.
- In the popup window, click the pencil icon next to the Device Version field.
- Select the desired version from the drop-down list.
- Wait up to 10 minutes for the update to be received and reflected in the portal.
Manual Update for Android Devices
- If the remote update fails on an Android device:
- You can retry using the Manual Update button.
- This button is found on the Identity Overlay page of the screen.
- To access it, press the centre/OK button on the remote control while the screen is showing Fusion Signage content.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
- If the update still fails after this, you will need to manually install the latest app version directly on the device.
If an Update Fails (All Platforms)
- If a device doesn’t update successfully within 10 minutes the device will likely need to be manually updated by installing the latest Fusion Signage app directly on the hardware.
